King County Executive Dow Constantine and Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn agreed on set of simple but effective protocols for making important decisions during an emergency. The Memorandum of Understanding for Coordinated Policy and Decision-Making During an Emergency is a collaborative agreement that provides a framework for elected leaders to coordinate policy-level decision-making when emergencies threaten our region such as floods, severe winter storms, and earthquakes. Executive Constantine and Mayor McGinn signed the agreement during a brief ceremony at the City of Seattle’s Emergency Operations Center on December 14.

The Memorandum of Understanding is available for signature by any political subdivision or Indian tribe with territory in geographic King County. Besides King County and Seattle, signatories to date include the cities of Auburn, Kent, Renton, Tukwila, Shoreline, Yarrow Point, Covington, Hunts Point, Carnation, Bothell, and Beaux Arts.
