On Wednesday, November 9 at 11 a.m., people across the nation tuned into radio or TV will hear a message with the words “This is a test,” followed by a series of tones and other information about the Emergency Alert System. The total transmission should last about 30 seconds.
Local broadcasters, in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will be conducting the first-ever nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). The test will help federal partners and local EAS participants determine the reliability of the system and its effectiveness in notifying people of emergencies and potential dangers.
The nationwide Emergency Alert System test also serves as a reminder that everyone should create an emergency plan and preparedness kit for themselves, their families, and workplace.
